Pearl is the genuine birthstone for June. It is the only gem from living sea creatures that take no faceting or polishing to uncover their natural beauty. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth but that doesn’t always occur. Natural pearls occurring in the wild are the most valuable but very rare. Cultured or farmed pearls, from freshwater mussels make up a majority of what is sold today.

Alexandrite is an alternative birthstone for June. It is a lovely green with purplish hues. Alexandrite can change colors depending of the light source. They are typically gren by daylight or fluorescent light but can turn red by incandescent light (lamp or candlelight). This dramatic color change is rare and much sought after. Alexandrite is also know to show different colors when moved different directions.
